Evaluation of Straight- and Crossbreeding in Beef Cattle in the R.S.A

چکیده
SUMMARY Results from various straight-and crossbreeding trials South Africa were reviewed. The conclusion is drawn that in instances, initial crossbreeding followed by inter ~ matin, crossbred cattle give the same if not better results than crossbreeding. This facilitates rangeland improvement as it number of pastures needed during the breeding season.

An overview of crossbreeding in beef cattle with reference to the Southern African situation
An increasing number of commercial beef producers direct themselves to crossbreeding systems in which crossbred animals have higher merit in reproduction, growth and end product. It has been claimed that heterosis in a sound crossbreeding program could increase the productivity in the beef cow herd by as much as 26% over a comparable straight breeding program. The availability of diverse beef c...

This study was an attempt to devise productive orientations of cattle herds in eastern high plains of Algeria. In this regard, 165 farms randomly identified were investigated. The selection of breeders was based to existence of cattle on the farm, and the farmer proposed to investigation must have at least two cows. The approach taken was to identify all systems adopted by farmers in a region t...

For 75 yr, Line 1 Hereford cattle have been at the forefront of beef cattle breeding research. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of scientific contributions made using the Line 1 Hereford population. It was initially developed as contribution to a western regional program from which beef producers were envisioned to use heterosis by crossing selected inbred lines. Whereas this v...
متن کاملMultibreed Genetic Evaluations of Beef Cattle
INTRODUCTION Interest in crossbreeding in commercial cattle herds in the latter half of the 20 century sparked a flurry of experiments characterizing breeds and breed crosses for additive and nonadditive gene effects. Analytical models for estimation of these effects naturally followed. A logical extension was to apply the methodology to estimation of genetic merit from records in populations r...
